Conjoined Twins Share Huge News 22 Years After Their Birth

Abigail and Brittany Hensel were both born in 1990 as twins. This wasn't too out of the ordinary. While not particularly common, twins aren't exactly rare either. However, they soon came into the public eye. Not just because they were twins, but because of the kind of twins they were. They were conjoined twins. A case such as theirs was rather rare, sharing a body but having different heads. Their story has since been covered extensively, over many years. And in 2012, they decided to share an important announcement.

Abby and Brittany Hensel were born March 7th 1990 in Carver County, Minnesota. They are what are known as dicephalic parapagus twins. That means that while they have a conjoined body, they each have their own head.

Conjoined twins aren't just known to be exceedingly rare, but also they generally have a low survival rate. There's a 1 in 189,000 chance that a pair of babies will be born this way. And then out of all those twins, only 11% are born as dicephalic parapagus. It was ordinarily difficult enough to be delivered, but these two have lived on well into adulthood.

While they share a body, they don't share quite as much as you might think. Each twin actually has most of their own sets of organs. They have two stomachs, two hearts, and four lungs. However, they do share a reproductive system, large intestine, and liver.

The twins have say that their body has been divided by a red line. One controls the left, the other controls the right. As such, they need to work together in order to move properly.

The pair had to learn not just how to live together, but how to move together. This is how they learned to crawl, walk, and do other tasks. This is even how they learned how to drive. And according to themselves, they're pretty competent drivers.

Of course, the life they live isn't without compromise. Sharing a body means that they need to agree on what to do, when to do it, and even what to wear.

Although, they have to agree on what to wear, the pair don't like wearing the same clothes. Abby prefers more vibrant clothes while Brittany prefers to wear more muted colors.

One also has to remember that, while these twins share a body, they aren't the same person. They have completely different personality types. Most notably, Abby's the more assertive out of the pair.

Speaking of different personalities, they have different fears and interests as well. For example, Brittany's afraid of heights, while Abby isn't. And Brittany prefers the arts while Abby prefers the sciences.

Abby and Brittany have been appearing in public and on television for years ever since they were children. Their story and unique physique captivated audiences. They even once appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

For a while, the Hensel twins even had their own show. After the success of the documentary Joined for Life, which focused on them, they got their own show reality television series. It was called Abby & Brittany and focused on the pair after they had graduated from college. Although, it only ran for eight episodes.

The twins have been pretty open about their trials and tribulations with the media, but there is one thing they've decided to keep private. And that would be their love lives. There's always something that people in the public eye should be allowed to keep to themselves.

The twins have been rather open about their friendships though. Their friends have been rather supportive and protective of the twins over the many years they've known them.

The twins have traveled quite a lot over the last few years, and they often travel with their friends. Abby and Brittany's friends will often watch over them and make sure they're safe and happy because of all the stares they can get.

With all the fame, the trouble, and all the eyes that are constantly watching them, things can get pretty overwhelming. When they're feeling overstimulated, they just need to take a break from it all. Fortunately, they still have their friends and family to back them up.

Patty Hansel is the mother of the Hansel twins. She's been incredibly supportive to her children and wishes for nothing more than their success. She's incredibly proud of her children.

In 2012, the twins managed to get a teaching job. Following an interview with the school's principle, Mr. Good, a faculty member walked over to him and practically begged him to hire the pair. They ended up as math specialists, teaching the fourth and fifth grade. It began as a part-time job, allowing them to more comfortably transition into teaching.

As teachers now, the pair essentially do the job of one person, so they get the paycheck of one. However, they're still different people and are able to more efficiently teach their class than if they were just one person.

It was uncharted territory for the school, having a pair of teachers as conjoined twins. They sent out letters to all of the students' families and intended to introduce Abby and Brittany during an open house. While it would probably be strange to the students unaccustomed to seeing people like the Hensels, all of the faculty was confident that their personalities and teaching skill would outshine everything else.
